March 2013: Cooler, drier than normal

March lived up to its reputation of being a transition month from winter to spring in Southern New England. Relative to normal, the coldest part of the month was in the middle, with some mild weather at the start and end. On average, the temperature was not far from normal, coming in at 0.4° below normal at TF Green Airport in Providence, RI. It was also about 0.5° below normal in Boston, MA. 1.0° below normal in Worcester, MA, and near normal in Hartford, CT.

Providence did not receive as much snow as most of Southern New England, with 4.9″ falling. That’s actually slightly below normal for the month. Boston (20.6″) and Worcester (30.9″) both received well above normal snowfall. It was a relatively dry month, with only 55% of the normal amount of precipitation in Providence. March is typically the wettest month of the year, with a normal total of 5″ in Providence. This year, there was 2.75″ of liquid precipitation. It’s not enough, however, to raise drought concerns because of the snowpack in New England. Here are a few other notes on the weather  in Southern New England in March 2013.

  • The high temperature in Providence for the month was 59° – reached each of the last three days of the month
  • In Providence in 2012, there were 11 days when the temperature reached at least 60° in March
  • The average monthly temperature in Providence was 38.5° – nearly 8° colder than 2012 (46.3°) which was the third warmest on record
  • Both Worcester (8) and Boston (7) experienced a top-10 snowiest March.
  • It was the snowiest combined February and March on record in Worcester, MA – 75.3″
