February 2013: White, wet, and chilly in SNE

February 2013 was the coldest, snowiest, and wettest month of the winter in Southeastern New England. The month featured two blizzards – one widespread and one localized to Eastern MA. There was also over two feet of snow in the Providence area, including 18″ from the February 8-9 blizzard. Here are some highlights of February 2013 in Providence. All records are kept at TF Green Airport.

  • Average temperature: 31° (1° colder than normal, 5° warmer than last year)
  • 24.3″ snow (7th most on record since 1904)
  • 5.03″ precipitation (150% of normal precipitation)
  • 1.39″ of rain on February 27 (record for the date)
  • 18″ of snow February 8-9 (tied for 6th biggest snowstorm on record)
  • 48° high temperature for the month (5 days in January topped 55°)
  • 16 of 28 days featured at least a trace of precipitation
  • 12 of 28 days featured at least a trace of snow
  • Only two of 28 days were clear
  • 7 of 28 days featured peak wind gusts of at least 35 mph
